This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever held. The homes featured are, of course, magnificent in themselves, but Leslie Williamson is no amateur photographer. She shot everything with natural light, which gives her photos a realness, a sense of how it would feel to live there. She also shot everything on film and is a compositional wizard...the photos are stunning.

If you like these photos then please, get your hands on this book. You will not be disappointed. I take the time to scan these printed materials because I enjoy sharing my interests and what I find beautiful and I like having a place to organize my findings. That being said, books cannot be beat. A photo book is an experience well beyond the scanning of an image and the turning of a page. It has a weight, a realness, and multiple textures. It has colors which cannot be adequately experienced through pixels...

I'm glad anyone looks at this blog and might share these scans, but please, let the prints live on! If you like a book or a photographer featured here, I urge you to find that book or a book by the artist you like and hold it in your hands. It makes for a totally different (and completely better) experience than what you find here on this blog.

"Like most countries, India has fancy brothels and expensive call girls. But the pictures in this book were taken on a street in Bombay where the less expensive prostitutes live and work, an area famous for the cage-like houses in which some of the women live. These photographs were taken between October 1978 and January 1979. During that time I got to know and enter the world of some of the women on Falkland Road. They were very special women. This book is for them--with deep thanks to my friend Saroja." -Mary Ellen Mark

they only charge two rupees." (seven rupees equaled one
dollar).

Lalita, the madam of this house, thought Nina (pictured here) was the
most beautiful of all her girls. The day I came to photograph Nina,
her madam dressed her in new pink panties.

At the entrance of a transvestite cage.

Ragini, a transvestite. The man on the bed claims to be 100 years old. He is
retired now, and the other transvestites take care of him.

I would hear voices from behind the curtains; once a customer saying,
"My glasses, my glasses, where are my glasses?" and a thirteen-
year-old prostitute saying "Come on now, behave, be proper."

The girls bathe very thoroughly, at least once a day.

Midafternoon

Kanta: "I could never visit my parents. I haven't seen them for years. I
don't know if they are dead or alive. But I could never visit them. I
would bring shame to them."

Kamla: "Often when I am with a customer, I hold my legs straight and he
doesn't even enter me. After all, my body is my own."

Munni is fifteen years old. "I was begging in front of the Taj Mahal Hotel, when
a foreigner bought me a red skirt, a shirt and shoes and socks. The name tattooed
on my arm is the only thing I can bring with me to my death."

A massive minaret, some 175 feet high, spirals skyward above the ruins of Islam's largest
mosque, in the Ninth century capital of Samarra.

A golden leaf from the Q'ran is elaborately decorated with Arabic motifs. The verse
commands the soldiers of Islam to give one fifth of all plunder in battle to the mosque and
the state.

The dome and minaret of the Guyushi Mosque built in the 11th Century on a bluff above Cairo.

The Spacious Courtyard of Ibn Tulun dwarfs a man standing beside the mosque's dome-covered fountain.

A ritual cleansing in the fountain of the mosque of Ibn Tulun prepares a Muslim
for his prayers.

An openwork window of fine, hard stucco, carved while wet, decorates the sanctuary
